Massage has always been one of the most natural and instinctive means of relieving pain and discomfort. When a person has sore, aching muscles, abdominal pains, or a bruise or wound, the instinctive impulse is to touch and rub that part of the body to obtain relief.
Remedial Massage/Deep Tissue Massage
This massage is used in clients who have decreased range of motion, chronic symptoms, and tension in the body or pain. It is a deeper massage working into various layers of muscle tissue. Just because it is a deep massage doesn’t mean it needs to be painful. I use various techniques to make sure my client is relaxed on the table and stays within their pain threshold. Remedial massage works deeply into the layers of muscle tissue to release chronic tension in the body. Treatment aims to improve joint range of motion, reduce tension in tight muscles and reduce pain. As a qualified massage therapist Kathryn targets any specific problem areas that you may have. The depth or “pressure” used is varied depending on the region, degree, type of pain and your preferred pressure, which is maintained within your pain threshold

Sports Massage
There are three types of Sports Massage;
1. TRAINING - injury prevention, quality training enhancement, strong post-training recovery.
2. PRE-EVENT - focuses the mind - body feedback loop. Contributes to soft tissue 'warm-up'.
3. POST-EVENT - Post-event 'warm down' is critical. Sports massage can assist in maintaining the efficiency of blood flow and maximising the interchange of nutrients and metabolites; warm down is then more effective which helps the athlete recover. Complete muscular relaxation is a vital part of the process.
Techniques vary depending upon which phase the client is in.
Sports massage is playing a major role in performance preparation, training and injury recovery. Athletic teams know that an athlete's injury may become an ongoing problem if it is not initially comprehensively dealt with. Excessive inflammation from such injuries is known to cause tissue adhesion, joint restriction and loss of muscular extensibility.

Relaxation Massage
This is a very structured, smooth and firm (not deep) massage. It can relax the entire nervous system and is the most beneficial when dealing with anxiety, stress or depression issues. It also assists with sleep, digestion and removing the body of toxins. There are still substantial health benefits to a relaxation massage, including calming the nervous system (which is beneficial in the treatment of emotional and physical stress), promoting a sense of well-being, improving blood circulation and stimulating the body's lymphatic system, which carries away waste products.

Therapeutic Massage
In reality most clients require a combination of the above massage styles. This is where my Therapeutic massage comes in. Depending upon the information gained from the client assessment, and what occurs during the massage I adjust my techniques to ensure the client receives the most beneficial massage for their needs.

Aromatherapy Massage
Aromatherapy Massage is generally a relaxation massage with Manual Lymphatic Strokes included. This allows the tissues optimal absorption of the oils. However I will happily incorporate the use of oils into any of my massages. I use Aromatherapy Cards which allows the client to choose their own oils.
Aromatherapy massage is the use of aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well being.
The different smells (aromas), and the chemical constituents of the oils, can produce different emotional and physiological reactions. Although aromatherapy has been practiced for centuries in various cultures, the modern version was developed mainly in France. Aromatherapy has not yet undergone as much scientific scrutiny as other complementary therapies, but research so far shows that it can be an effective treatment for some complaints, as aromatic plant oils can stimulate, balance, uplift, soothe and calm and this release of stress and tension can allow the body’s own healing process to begin.
How does Aromatherapy massage work?
The nostrils are attached to a part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones. When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system. Essential oils are also believed to be absorbed through the skin. Each essential oil has different healing properties. For example, some calm while others energize. Here are some widely used essential oils and their properties:
